Audio from my Homeland tour presentation

Thomas "Command Line" Gideon came out for the DC stop on my Homeland tour, at Busboys and Poets, and mic'ed me up for the event. He's mastered the audio and posted it. It's a 40 minute talk about the promise of technology to improve our lives, the risks from allowing technology to be used to surveil and control us, and the contributions Aaron Swartz made to this cause and to the book. There's also about 20 minutes of Q&A.

  1. While I liked the pizza shop analogy, I don't think it went far enough. Your ISP won't tell you "oh, hey, we're making your connection suck". It will just suck. I think a better analogy would be to modify it to:

... as if you are trying to call Tony's pizza, the best pizza in town, and it seems to ring for 5, 10, 15 seconds (prior to the phone *actually* ringing at Tony's) and then AT&T breaks in with an automated message saying "Tony's Pizza seems not to be answering their phone very quickly. If you would like, we can connect you to Domino's, where they will answer right away! Press 1 to connect."

I'm sure you could word-smith this better.

  2. P.S. Now I'm getting really hungry and want to go to Tony's Pizza Napoletana in SF for lunch, which I cannot do! *fist-shake* ;)
