One problem I see with education today is the notion that everyone is equally capable of every type of learning.
I'm all in favor of teaching RegEx to the kids with the aptitude and interest, but the world needs to recognize that not everyone is going to be able to do this kind of thing with anywhere near equal proficiency.
I think that one of the problems with education in the west is the notion that everyone has a unique set of subjects in which they can excel. I think that the eastern philosophy of struggle in learning should be more seriously considered in western thought.
My own education required me to take French (which I was terrible at) and Maths (which I was awesome at). I know there were kids in those classes with me who had exactly the opposite experience. If we had been focusing more on how struggling through the work was teaching us to learn better, we would have had a much better time in those classes where we weren't excelling, as long as our society praised that struggle instead of denigrating it.
Tons of regexp games? Am I on a different internet?
