The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Publishing Science Fiction

Karl Schroeder and I co-wrote this comprehensive guide to science fiction publishing that was published in 2000. Despite its age, it has held up remarkably well, espeically the pieces on how to write your stories and prepare your manuscripts. I get a lot of questions from starting writers about how to break in, and I always point them as this book.

Love your writing and read Boing Boing EVERY DAY! I was delighted and surprised to find you did a Complete Idiot's Guide as well. Thanks!

  2. Kem Mason says:

Any chance this will get republished?

I just got a copy of this book, and am really enjoying it. One thing I noticed, though: on page 226, there's a "Danger! Danger!" blurb that says "Never put a complete, unpublished story on a Web site." Now, given your reputation for providing free content (the main reason I bought this book), I assume this warning no longer applies, what with the CC licensing that is available?

    Keep up the great work!

Oh yes indeed! THere's plenty out of date in this one, especially the erights section.

  5. Tom Vandermolen says:

Good to hear, and thanks for the quick reply!

  6. MMS says:

Is there a CC version available for download?

  7. Cory Doctorow says:

Nope. This one predates CC licenses themselves by some years, and as I no longer have a relationship with the publisher, I'm not able to negotiate such a thing.
