Overclocked: More Stories of the Future PresentCory Doctorow ebookNo ebook available Buy From Bookshop.org |
It’s not clear what formats the books are downloadable in. At least, one cannot see that by using Chrome on Android phones. I need .mobi (yes, I know, Amazon’s evil, but the most ethic ebook reader is the one you own already). Thanks!
Thanks, Gianfranco — you’re right, we’re updating the store to include this info. The books come as MOBIs and EPUBs.
Same question as Gianfranco, but for the audiobooks – what format are they in?
For those titles that lack an e-book format, is there a possible roadmap for providing them in the future? BTW, thanks for providing e-pubs! Thanks
It’s in my queue! Too busy writing this summer though.
I’d like to tell you that this was the best experience that I had buying a digital thing from the internet: I get to use the e-pub in the device I want with the software I want (CoolReader in my case) and I can also change the file name to my preferences, store it in the folder of my preference and include it in my backup. Great!
Thank you for supporting a DRM-free world!
Outstanding, Luis. Very glad to hear it.
I’d love to be able to buy your books using Bitcoin or some other cryptocurrency. I’m a little surprised to not see it as an option already; any plans to accept them in the (near) future? Cheers!
Hi Cory, you mentioned on BB that there’s a set of your books being released with new cover art. When/where will these be available?
-thx!
Hey, Brian! They come out in May — you can order from here: https://boingboing.net/2017/10/18/walkaway-loves-company.html
Hi, Cory — is the program wherein I could buy a book for a library that requested it still around?
Yes – not all the books, but some:

Hey Cory,
I bought my 8-year-old daughter a copy of IRL for Christmas. She has already read it multiple times. Are you planning on writing any more books targeting younger readers?
Hey, Krysten! There’s a picture book in the offing, probably 2020!
I thought you offered all your books’ text free. When did that stop? I own 4 of your paperbacks – thanks for signing them in Portland btw – but I wanted to get started on others and don’t see links here nor elsewhere.
Most are, except Walkaway, which my publisher wouldn’t give me permission to distribute — see, e.g. https://craphound.com/littlebrother/download
Hey Cory, how about some descriptions and review links/quotes? Just adding a short synopsis would go a long way imo. Also the year of publication.
Hi Cory – just a wee bug report here; on Chrome, I can’t get the shopping cart to retain items. I can click on items, and purchase them singly; but if I dismiss the cart and click on another item, the previous item vanishes. This happens even if I trust the page in Ghostery and Adblock Plus and refresh. However, it works just fine in Safari.
Yikes! Thanks, Dave!
Hi Cory. Is there a comprehensive list of the work you’ve released into the Creative Commons? I’m working on putting together a collection of public domain/freely distributable texts, and I’ve made a point to include your work, but your site is a little hard to navigate, and in some places contradictory (for example, you offer “Content” for download in various formats, none of which is available through the shop). There’s also some confusion as to which of your books are CC and which ones aren’t; Jeremy Waite, for example, in his “Ten Words” entry for you (https://books.google.com/books?id=IH40DwAAQBAJ&pg=PT116), says that you published “Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free” under CC on the Internet Archive, which doesn’t appear to be the case (they do have a copy, but there’s no indication that you put it there). I don’t want to include any titles in the collection that shouldn’t be part of it. Thanks!
Hi Cory.
As digital overtakes print, I’ve noticed a growing line of titles being released (or re-released) as hardcovers or in faux leather. Classics like Dickens or Stoker have had the treatment and more modern essentials are now appearing as well.
It seems publishers wish to appeal to those like me who gaze wistfully at online images of bespoke libraries – boasting tall shelves of dark wood, sliding ladders, a spiral staircase and at least one good reading chair – who still want physical books worth showing off in such a space.
While I like the line of new covers your publisher has lined up, are there any plans to do really GOOD hardcovers to grace my own piece of L-space?
Thanks!
P.S. While the ‘Leave a Reply’ form below has no ‘(required)’ label next to its Website field, the Submit button won’t work (I’m in Chrome) unless that field is populated. I don’t have a website to list, so this does hamper things. :)
Hey there! I have retained the rights to do limited editions; I did one a few years back and it was satisfying but a lot of work; when/if I get a breather, I may revisit the idea. I have some pretty ambitious ideas!
Hi Cory,
Very glad to see a shop on your website! Just a question, do you plan to add other options than paypal?
I have already pay via them, but now it seems that creating an account is mandatory.
Sorry, nope.
I was looking for signed copies of some of your books and was wondering if there were particular charities, or vendors you support that might have them for sale.
Hey there! I signed a bunch of books at Volumes in Chicago last week (https://www.volumesbooks.com/) — I’m sure they can ship some to you!
Fantastic recommendation. Helpful staff, fast shipping the books arrived in great condition.
Dunno if anyone follows these, but don’t know where else to post.
Been trying to order the audiobook of WalkAway for 3 days now, the paypal redirect works, but once past the pick-the-account stage, the payment process halts. Can’t complete.
so, something is amiss.
Hey, Chip! Sounds like maybe script-blocking or similar? Try with browser with extensions turned off or in Safe Mode/Private Mode?
Hey Cory;
thnx much for the quick response. Yeah, it worked just fine next time I bothered to try. Odd. I run a pretty stripped down FF, a few of the suggested EFF extensions, but that’s about it, always in private mode. I step out of that when things don’t work, but I couldn’t get any combo to work the other day. >shrug<
Again, thnx
Just wanted to say I loved Walkaways so much, so very very much. I left a review on Kobo. Right after I was done with that I bought Eastern Standard Tribe – an engrossing and fun read. Before those I bought a couple of short stories, too — sorry, I forget the titles. One was a sort of prequel to Walkaways (which I LOVED SO MUCH I have to say it again). I’m hooked, I’m gonna read everything you’ve written! When I saw in the book notes that I could find you on Boing Boing, I came straight here to say thanks!
Thank you, Terry!
Hey, I was planning to buy Walkaway as an ebook(already own a paperback copy, and loved it), but I saw that the Kindle version is 9.99, while the DRM-free version here is 12.99. Is the price discrepancy intentional? Sorry if this has already been asked. Thanks for the great books!
I have a script that’s supposed to price-match from Amazon, but it must be lagging.
Hi Cory,
I saw an interview with you where you said the software/code for this shop will be made available. Is there a timeline for that? Where can I find news on its progress?
Thanks,
Éibhear
I’m having the same problem Dave Cochran reported in 2018: the cart won’t retain items. If I add a book, dismiss the cart and then try to add another book, the previous book is gone. Firefox, Linux, with noscript but I’ve temp trusted all the JS domains this page wants.
Thanks, Akk! Can you try with another browser and see if the problem persists? That’ll help narrow down the causes.
Hi can I have the answer key for the little brother reading guide
Sorry, kiddo, you’re on your own.
Sorry, I didn’t see that you had replied.
Sure enough, it works in a different browser. I did a divide-and-conquer on my firefox prefs, and it boiled down to this:
user_pref(“network.cookie.cookieBehavior”, 1);
1 means: only accept from the originating site (block third party cookies)
So anyone blocking third-party cookies will be unable to buy books from this store. Which seems like a shame! I don’t generally have problems buying things with this firefox profile, so requiring third-party cookies seems unusual.
Now that I know, I’ve unblocked third-party cookies temporarily, because I did want to pay for these excellent books.
Cory, I’m brand new to your works. Where do you recommend I start? Thanks!
