I’ve won the EFF Pioneer Award

This is the most incredible accolade I've ever received: I have been honored with the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer Award, which "recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant and influential contributions to the development of computer-mediated communications and to the empowerment of individuals in using computers and the Internet." I join the ranks of previous winners, including Tim Berners-Lee, Mitch Kapor, Jimmy Wales, Bruce Sterling, and Linus Torvalds. My fellow winners this year are Yochai Benkler and Bruce Schneier. Talk about exalted company! The awards will be given out at a ceremony chaired by Marc Cuban, at the Emerging Tech conference in San Diego later this month. I'm incredibly thankful to EFF for this honor.

Good on ya! It's a well deserved recognition.

  4. David says:

Congrats, Cory! I know I've become interested and near-obsessed with DRM, copyright, and creative commons because of you and your work. An award well-deserved!

  5. Isaac B2 says:

Glad to hear the good news, Cory -- pleased but not surprised.

  6. Brent says:

Congratulations! I'm in the same boat as David (two replies up). You've really helped shape my knowledge and opinions on copyright, law, society and how they all intertwine.

  7. Congratulations Cory!

I've just come home from your presentation at SFU's downtown Vancouver campus. I've read and listened to a lot of your stuff (fiction and non-fiction), and I know people you've taught in various contexts and have listen to their raves about your level of energy and productivity, etc, etc. So I went to the presentation with very high expectations, and you blew right past them without breaking a sweat.

I was one of the people who asked questions from the audience after your presentation; I asked a nice, proper question relevant to the topic of the evening... But what I really wanted to ask you was this: Dude, what's in your secret sauce?! How do you get so much done?!?

  8. Mark McKay says:

    Congrats man, you deserve it.

  9. [...] Long story short, Cory’s cool. His interests are in the technology, society, copyright, privacy, freedom spectrum. A lot of people in that world can be a little intense: prone to conspiracy theories and rants. Cory was very thoughtful and knows an insane amount about this stuff. He has also been directly involved in an amazing amount of technology policy (and just won the EFF Pioneer Award). [...]

  10. Congratulations, Cory! You definitely earned it... btw we missed you (again) at SXSW Interactive.

  11. I couldn't agree more with al the fine people who've commented before me. I really think EFF couldn't have made a better choice. You've sparked my interest in copyright & technology, and you're basically one of my favourite beings in the Universe! :)

I really hope to meet you when you're ever in Belgium again.

Congrats Cory! Thanks for your awe inspiring contributions to the digital world. Thanks to EFF for recogniozing greatness.

  13. Kim says:

Congrats! Well deserved. Your work has been an eye opener. Also lead to me give to the EFF for the first time last year. (And you know that since I work for Microsoft, they matched my contribution. There's some irony in that, I guess :-)

Cory, rather belatedly (I've been offline for a bit till a couple weeks ago & am still catching up on stuff), many congratulations - very well deserved.

Hope all continues to go well with you, and hope to see you again in London sometime.

    With best wishes
    Imp.
