I bought your book because I liked the cover art.
I didn’t regret it.
Have you looked into what Joey Comeau (of A Softer World) did with his novel? He needed tuition money, so He released one chapter online, then asked for paypal donations, and when he got $250 in donations, he posted the next chapter. He had the whole book up in under a week. Then he wrote three more chapters and released a print version.

Lockpick Pornography is the title. Lovely book.

Just found your site, and can’t wait to read your book and short stories. I am sure you’re familiar with it, but just in case you aren’t, I wanted to mention that http://www.baen.com is doing a similar experiment with free downloads. Eric Flint is coordinating posting previously published books from various authors. I just found that site also, so I can’t provide any useful feedback about the e versus dead tree book.

I love people who are generous and these kinds of things where you appear to not be selling me something, where there’s absolutely no pressure to buy the book, where you’re secure enough that you’re awesome and that your stories are awesome you can give them away for free. And that’s in a way the ultimate sales pitch– it makes me feel like buying them. There’s such a clean feeling from all this e-honesty.

Actually, if you look at the statistics, books sales have consistently gone up over the last ten years. And within sf/f, Locus has shown the same thing. The “people as many books any more” is just a myth.

just picked the collection up today and i’m in love. “to market, to market” resonates with me in a couple of circularly linked levels. it’s a great story but i’m struck by the overlap with the concepts outlined in “the tipping point” (the last book i’d read). “the tipping point” is a couple of years old and covers a swath of memes about how people find out about the things they know. what get’s me is the bit in the introduction about hearing about a trend before everyoneelse so the story seems fresh. i’m left feeling horribly stale.

Have you looked at http://www.bitpass.com as a way to make money off these electronic versions. Maybe releasing a few chapters, or stories to interest people and then charging for the rest of the book, or more stories. Or maybe you could just use bitpass to get donations from your readers, who might not want to pay the entire price for a hardcover but are willing to pay small amounts for the online use. What do you think.
