Have to pass this on as an anonymous tip--maybe it's only of private interest to y'all. At least several big CD retailers are freaking out about the Sony DRM rootkit issue. I'm in the industry and have contacts at other companies, and lots of people are running around at lots of companies trying to put out fires this thing has sparked off. Sony has been "asking" us to post announcements on our websites saying that Sony CDs are OK and that people can use the rootkit uninstaller. Sony is also trying to get us to take down the negative comments (about how the DRM makes the CDs a bad buy, to say the least!) people are leaving on Sony CDs on these websites. Based on the news I've been following via your great coverage on BoingBoing, I got the word out to everyone I know about the uninstaller making things worse. At least one company was about to post a big announcement recommending people use the Sony uninstaller, and then was very grateful to get the news you posted and hold back on the announcement, which would have obviously made things worse for the retailer's customer relationships. Y'all are doing a great public service. thanks!!!
