  1. They *are* Amazon's customers. Or the author's customer. The rank and file readership doesn't have any publisher loyalty. They're not brands marketed to readers, and in may cases operate primarily on a B2B basis; Hatchette's name carries weight with the authors (producers) and booksellers it connects them with.

    I'd be surprised if most casual readers even knew what Hatchette was beyond a vague familiarity with the name. Few of them would consider themselves the customers of any given publisher.
